Day Trips: Monticello

Need a break from the Richmond area? If you're a history buff you'll want to check out Monticello, home to Thomas Jefferson. I recently took a trip there this week and definitely consider it a must see. The 3rd president's home is located in Charlottesville (only about a 30 minute drive from the city). There's a peacefulness that comes with being in view of the (Appalachian) mountains and the remaining snow on the ground during my trip brought back the memory of Richmond's own winter wonderland. The people of Monticello are extremely helpful and good natured which helps mold this excursion into a great experience.

Suggestions for Monticello trip:
The regular house tour does not include the upstairs of the home due to the tiny size of the stair cases. So for a more intimate tour make reservations for the evening tour which highlights the upstairs of the home. Monticello also provides wine tasting tours in the summer that tour the garden area.

After touring the Monticello grounds take a stroll through Charlottesville's downtown mall which is a home to a dynamic array of shops and restaurants set up in the historic buildings of Old Main Street and is considered one of the nations finer urban parks.
